I can honestly say that getting to meet and COOK with famous chef Michael Mina checks a few things off my personal bucket list. Born in Egypt, and cooking since as early as he can remember, Michael Mina is an incredible chef and restaurateur. From 18 running restaurant concepts, to Michelin stars, countless accolades and a cookbook to his name, Michael is the real deal.
I’ll admit to occasionally being labeled a foodie, but I think living in Los Angeles, traveling the world, growing vegetables (and eating!) all contribute to my appreciation for food – both fancy and humble.
When I first moved to LA, I spent some time as a maître d’ in a very high-end restaurant and hotel, and I learned a lot about what it takes to keep a wildly popular restaurant concept running and top-of-mind for consumers. When we got the opportunity to work with Michael for our Behind the Design series, I was thrilled!
I don’t want to spoil the fun by telling you too much – the episode will come out very soon, but we had a chance to pop into Michael’s popular Mina Test Kitchen concept restaurant in San Francisco, and eat and drink our way through the menu. Packed with flavors and colors, this is an experience I won’t forget!
I was fascinated to hear how detail-oriented Michael is with his restaurant properties – and not just in the kitchen. He explained that every single element, from the textiles, to the lighting, to the flatware – all affect how a person experiences his dishes. He credits his continued inspiration and success to the wonderful chefs, employees, designers and creative partners he gets to work with.
As they say, teamwork makes the dream work! Stay tuned for the episode featuring my conversation with Michael. I only wish you could eat everything we ate while making it!
